This waiting list is for Mainstream Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental housing assistance in Sandusky County, Ohio.

The Sandusky Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA) Mainstream Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher is currently open. Applications will be accepted from October 13, 2020 at 8:00 am, until June 17, 2021 at 4:30 pm ET.

Please note: According to the SMHA, "A family member on the application must be between the ages of 18-61 and disabled and the applicant family must be either homeless (or at risk of becoming homeless) or be institutionalized (or at risk of becoming institutionalized)."

There are three ways to apply during the opening period:

  1. Print the application that is available online here.
  2. Pick up a paper application at the SMHA office, located at 1358 Mosser Drive, Fremont, Ohio 43420; from 8:00 am until 12:15 pm, and 1:00 pm until 4:30 pm; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
  3. Request a paper application by mail.

Once the paper application has been completed, it must be either:

  1. Mailed to Sandusky Metropolitan Housing Authority, 1358 Mosser Drive, Fremont, Ohio 43420.
  2. Returned to the drop box located outside of the SMHA office, at the address above.
  3. Faxed to (419) 334-6933.
  4. Emailed to [email protected].

This waiting list has the following preferences:

  • Veterans
    • Applicants who are (1) presently serving or (2) have served in the active military or naval service of the United States and who were discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable are considered to be veterans.
  • Homeless Families
    • Lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence; AND
    • Have a primary nighttime residence that is a supervised public or private shelter providing temporary accommodations (including welfare hotels, congregate shelters and transitional housing), or an institution providing temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or a public or private place not ordinarily used as a sleeping accommodation for human beings.
    • A homeless family does not include any person imprisoned or otherwise detained pursuant to an Act of Congress or a State Law. Homeless families may maintain their place on the waiting list while completing a transitional housing program. Families who are residing with friends or relatives on a temporary basis will not be included in the homeless definition.
  • Handicapped/Disabled Persons
    • Persons with disabilities as defined by HUD.
  • Mainstream Voucher
    • Non-Elderly Disabled family member who is homeless (or at risk of becoming homeless) or institutionalized (or at risk of becoming institutionalized).
  • Over- or Under- housed
    • Families currently living in SMHA public housing who, because of decreases or increases in family size, need a unit with less than two (2) bedrooms or more than three (3) bedrooms, may transfer to the Voucher program in order to obtain an appropriately sized unit.

Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, weighed by order of preferences.
